1525 14th STREET NW

The site for this project consisted of an open parking lot plus a historic three-story commercial structure. Our design solution, while strikingly modern, complements and defers to the existing building in its materials and composition. Most of the addition is clad in a glass-and-white-metal curtain wall, while a slightly projecting bay in gray zinc panels creates an intermediate scale between old and new. The newly added floors above the historic structure, which are set back from the street plane, required a lightweight structural system to avoid overstressing the existing columns.
