The Matrix

1529 14th Street NW, Washington, DC

A 1920s automobile showroom is the centerpiece of the Matrix, a condominium and retail project that includes additions above and on both sides of the historic building. In order to maximize usable square footage, we chose not to align the floors in the side additions with the upper floors over the original structure. Instead, we celebrated these deliberate misalignments by creating distinctive split-level units. The facades of the side additions were composed to allude to medium-sized historic commercial and mixed-use buildings once common to the 14th Street corridor
