PORTNER FLATS

1440 V Street NW, Washington, DC

Replacing an old garden apartment-style complex occupied mainly by low-income residents, Portner Flats accommodates all of the tenants of the previous complex while providing 50 additional low-income units. Projecting bays punctuate the street façade, while a rich palette of light grey brick, darker grey brick, and brightly colored engineered wood accent panels breaks down the building’s apparent scale. The midrise structure creates a sensitive transition between the taller building to the west and the 3-1/2-story building to the east.
